Physics
Physics is the study of the whole range
of science dealing with matter and energy and the relationships between them.
It is a science subject so practical work is an important element.
You should have studied Science to GCSE
level and achieved grade CC or better along with grade C in Mathematics.
Why
choose Physics?
With a qualification in Physics you
could go on to study Science at a higher level or work in science-based
industry or engineering. Physics can also open a wide range of alternative
career paths to you in many diverse areas.
What
does the course involve?
To get a certificate for AS you will
need to have been assessed on your performance in three AS units:
Module
A Forces and Motion
A 90 minute written examination will
test your understanding of this module.
Module
B Electrons and Photons
A 90 minute examination will test your
understanding of this module.
Module
C1 Wave Properties
A 60 minute examination will test your
understanding of this half module and will combine with either a practical
examination or course work to complete the unit.
To get a certificate for Advanced GCSE
you will need to have been assessed on your performance in the three AS units
together with three further A2 units:
Module
D Forces, Fields and Energy
A 90 minute examination will test your
understanding of this module.
Module
E Options
One module will be chosen from the
following five and again tested by a 90 minute written examination.
E1 Cosmology
E2 Health Physics
E3 Materials
E4 Nuclear and Particle Physics
E5Telecommunications
Module
F Synoptic Work
This module tests how well you can draw
the threads of the previous two years work together and apply them to new
situations. It is tested by a 75 minute examination to make up a half unit of work.
You will also complete either a
practical examination or course work to assess your practical skills and complete the unit
How
is the course assessed?
AS A2
Unit A: 90 marks Unit D: 90 marks
Unit B: 90 marks Unit E: 90 marks
Unit C: 60 marks Unit F: 60 marks
Practical : Four
skills assessed
In each case the written examination
will consist of short answer questions and questions requiring a longer answer,
except for the synoptic paper, which omits the shorter answer questions.
