PHYSICAL EDUCATION

 

Why choose Physical Education?

 

Physical Education is a popular and demanding subject which develops body and mind.  The diversity of the subject opens up many career opportunities for the future.

 

 

What does the course involve?

 

The 1 year course is divided into 3 units.

Unit 1: Covers the social basis of sport and recreation focussing on issues relating to the UK and Europe.

Students are also required to complete an Olympic Case Study.

Unit 2: The practical element of the course focussing on how skills are learnt and the student=s development in a variety of sporting situations.

Students will be assessed in 2 sporting activities and tested on their observation and analysis skills in one sporting activity.

Unit 3:Exercise and training.

 

Students learn the effects of exercise of the body through the understanding of the various body systems.

Also studied in this section are various forms of fitness testing and students keep a log of their results.

 

Throughout the whole of the course students must keep an Individual Performance Portfolio (IPP) which monitors their progress, development and understanding of issues throughout the course.

 

How is the course taught?

 

A percentage of the contact time will be devoted to practical skills and some to theoretical issues.  Students will be engaged in some investigative work as well as informative study sessions.

THE WORK COVERED DURING THE TEACHER/STUDENT CONTACT TIME WILL NOT BE SUFFICIENT FOR STUDENTS TO PASS THIS COURSE.  STUDENTS WILL BE REQUIRED TO DO A GREAT DEAL OF INDEPENDENT STUDY!!

 

 

How is the course assessed?

 

Students sit 2  11/4 hour exams which cover the subjects studied in units 1 & 3.  This constitutes 60% of their final mark.

Coursework covers the other 40% which involves their practical assessment, theoretical knowledge of skill development and analysis of a nominated sport.

 

Students= IPPs are also submitted as part of the coursework.
