Why choose Music?

 

Choose Music because it will give you the opportunity to develop your own musical interests and skills, and provide a firm basis on which you can further build your appreciation and enjoyment of music throughout your adult life.  It offers an insight into many varied areas of study including classical, world, jazz and popular music.

 

You will be able to perform as an individual and as a member of a group, develop your own musical ideas and respond to a variety of musical styles.

 

What does the course involve?

 

It will involve a commitment to build upon your present achievements in the disciplines of LISTENING and APPRAISING, COMPOSING and PERFORMING.

 

 

To do well, you will need to be of at least Grade 5 standard in an instrument or solo singing in order to fulfil the performing requirements of the course, and you will be expected to work regularly with your instrumental/singing teacher to develop and acquire your personal repertoire.

 

You will be led by a team of specialist Music teachers who will guide you through the different Areas of Study.

 

How is this course taught?

 

You will receive a timetable of approximately 4 - 5 hours a week to cover the THREE units of (1) Performing, (2) Developing Musical Ideas, and (3) Listening and Understanding.  The teaching will be shared between the participating schools with the resources provided between these sites.

 

Instrumental/peripatetic teaching will be offered through the schools to convene individual needs and requirements.

 

How is the course assessed?

 

Your work will be monitored continually throughout the course by your teachers.

 

Unit 1: Performing (30%) your ‘solo’ performance will be recorded and assessed externally, whilst your ‘logged’ performance will be assessed internally.

 

Unit 2: DEVELOPING MUSICAL IDEAS (30%) your composition portfolio will be externally assessed.

 

Unit 3: LISTENING AND UNDERSTANDING, the Listening Test (15%) and Written Paper (25%) is also externally assessed.

 

Why is it valuable?

 

Music is a >Life= skill which can offer you immeasurable opportunities in a wide range of circumstances.  This course could be a gateway to your future enjoyment of music at all levels Instrumental/Vocal, Electronic/Acoustic, Bach to Beatles, Operatic/Musicals, performing or Listening, Professional or Amateur.

 

It can lead you on further to the full A2 course, and to subsequent careers in music or music related work.
