Media Studies

Why choose Media Studies ?

Media Studies offers you the opportunity to study aspects of the Media in depth and then put this learning into practice through creating your own productions.

You will study a wide variety of Media Genres exploring Conventions, Institutions, Industries, Practices, Issues and Debates presenting your findings and opinions in a variety of ways and writing in a number of different styles.

Final productions must be shown to an audience and market tested.

What does the course involve?

Unit 1: Foundation Practical

By the end of the first term you will have produced an original Media Text.  This year students produced the Front Page and several sections of a Sunday Supplement.

Unit 2: Textual Analysis

This is a two-part unit where you will examine in detail, and write comparative analysis, of at least two media texts, from two different Genres, and consider how the Media industries target audiences.

Unit 3: Individual Case Study

A Research topic relating to New Media Technologies.  You will choose one from a choice provided by the exam board, although your teacher will help you to make a choice.

How is this course taught?

The course is taught by two members of staff each covering specific areas of the course but who work closely together.

The course involves analysis, practical work and self-directed study.  Students must be well organised, committed able to synthesise academic arguments and produce well-structured essays and commentaries.

How is the course assessed?

Unit One is assessed on the Media text you produce, Units Two and Three are assessed by examination in June.

Why is it valuable?

Committed Media Studies students end the course able to present an opinion on a variety of issues as a complex ICT presentation, a practical production using film, photography and video or a well argued extended speaking presentation.

Many of our students go on to higher education in areas such as Journalism, English, ICT or Film and Television Studies.  Others find direct employment in the Media Industries of newspaper and television.

It is a fast paced subject where new technological developments mean that each year is challenging in a different way.

Do you want to explore issues such as racism, sexism, violence or politics in the media?

Do you want to learn how television and film impacts on our lives?

Do you want to find out about the secret agendas of Media Industries?

Then think about choosing Media Studies.
