MATHEMATICS
Why
choose Mathematics?
Maths is a deeply rewarding subject,
the importance of which is recognised throughout society.
It will enable you to bring and develop
a range of approaches and skills which will enable you to tackle a variety of challenges.
What
does the course involve?
The mathematics course is a modular
course. You will study 3 modules for AS
and a further 3 modules for A2. The
modules cover a variety of mathematical approaches, some compulsory and others
which can be chosen. You will have the
opportunity to study Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics.
1) Pure
Mathematics is the study of the language, structure and rules of
mathematics. You will extend many of the
topics you studied at GCSE, as well as developing understanding of completely
new areas.
2) Statistics
is an application of mathematics where you will describe and predict what
happens in the real world. You will look
at how to collect, interpret and display data as well as examining how
mathematics allows us to try and use data to predict situations through the use
of probability and other techniques.
3) Mechanics
is another application of mathematics in which you will try and predict how
bodies behave under the application of different forces.
How
is the course assessed?
The course is assessed through module
exams in the January and June each year of the course. The exams focus on the particular content of
the modules you have studied.
Some of the modules also have a
coursework component, which allows you to demonstrate your skills on more lengthy
pieces of work.
Why
is it valuable?
An A Level in Maths will help you
maximise your potential in the world of employment or Further Education.
Furthermore, Maths is crucial to help
you develop a greater understanding of human kind’s attempts to describe and
control the forces of nature and human behaviour.
