How is the course taught?
Leisure and Tourism is a vocational
course, which means that there is much more emphasis on the practical side of
developing skills which can be taken into the workplace. This is balanced however by the necessary theory
to support these skills. Much of the
content relies on first hand experience of how what you learn in the classroom
is applied ‘in the real world’; you achieve this through practical tasks, work
experience and visits to leisure and recreation organisations. .
Course tutors support you in many ways,
by delivering background theory, arranging visits, organising speakers and
advising on the planning and content of your work. GNVQs are designed
to enable you to develop your own approach to planning, researching and
completing your work, the more you demonstrate this in your work, the higher
your final grade could be. You are
encouraged to use as many sources of information as possible including ICT, but
you will be issued with a core text.
How
is the course assessed?
A third of the units are assessed
externally, in most cases this is by completing a written test requiring short
answers. The other unit are assessed by
your tutors and take the form of a portfolio of evidence. These can include written reports, video
presentations, and audiotapes of discussions, display materials, photographs
and witness statements. Each unit is
graded as a pass, merit or distinction as is the final ‘grade’ for the whole
course.
Why
is it valuable?
The intermediate GNVQ is equivalent to
four A - Cs at GCSE enabling you to gain entry onto industry training schemes
and access to Advanced vocational qualifications and
some further education courses. The foundation GNVQ is equivalent to four D’s
at GCSE enabling you to progress on to an Intermediate course. The work experience and insight into the
leisure and tourism industries as well as the study skills that you have gained
on this course will give you an advantage when applying for jobs in these areas
and many other areas.
