GNVQ in Business |
GENERAL
NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION IN BUSINESS
The Kett
Centre offers GNVQ Business at both intermediate and Foundation level.
The 6-unit Intermediate GNVQ is
designed to be of a standard equivalent to 4 GCSEs, at grades A* to C.
Why
choose GNVQ in Business?
These courses have proved to be very
popular and successful for sixth form students who wish to continue in full
time education but for whom a full AS programme is not suitable. They are one-year courses and can be studied
along side one or two AS subjects and English and/or Mathematics GCSE courses
if required.
If you choose GNVQ Business it is
likely that you intend to pursue a career within business, either directly you
have finished the course or after a period of further full time study. The course is broad based, and is a suitable
stepping stone for a wide variety of careers including administration, finance,
insurance, retail management or as a general qualification.
What
does the course involve?
The course is organised into six
units. Three of the units are
compulsory, these are:-
Investigating how businesses work
How businesses develop
Business finance
The other three units likely to be
offered are:-
Individuals and the organisation
Consumer protection
Business enterprise
How
is this course taught?
You will base much of your work on real
businesses, which you will visit or attend presentations by visiting
speakers. Some of these visits will be
arranged by your tutors but as the course progresses you should develop your
own business links. You will be expected
to build a portfolio of evidence of your research into the topics studied. This will include information you have gained
from people employed in various business sectors, information delivered by
course tutors using case studies and text books, your own research into the
topics studied. This will include
information you have gained from people employed in various business sectors,
information delivered by course tutors using case studies and text books, your
own research using current publications and the internet and discussion groups
with other students. The emphasis of all
vocational courses is for you to develop the skills to become an independent
learner and so produce work that is current, original and interesting.
How
is the course assessed?
Two of the units, Business Finance and
Individuals and the Organisation, are assessed by examination only. The other four units are assessed by your
coursework portfolio only. The six units
count equally for your final grade and hence there is greater emphasis placed
on your coursework than on examination.
Why
is it valuable?
Employers and Further Education
institutions highly value the skills and knowledge acquired on GNVQ programmes. Many successful students progress directly
into employment within business, often continuing their education on a NVQ
programme or with professional qualifications.
You may wish to continue in full time education and many students
progress from an Intermediate course to an Advanced Vocational course in
Business wh ich is
equivalent to two full A levels and can be used and an entry route into
University. These courses are offered at
the Kett centre and other Further Education
institutions.
