Why choose German?

 

Over 120 million people speak German.  More Europeans are native speakers of German than English, French, Italian or Spanish.  After English, German is most popular foreign language of study to learn in Europe.

Germany is economically the most important member of commerce, especially as a bridge language in former eastern block countries.

German is one of the pilot languages for new Microsoft products.

Germany has the world=s third largest economy and has considerable influence within Europe.  Germany has the highest paid workers in the World and one of the highest standards of living.

 

What does the course involve?

 

The emphasis is on developing your skills in German, on relevant issues such as:

*Daily Life      * Sport and Pastimes

* Travel           * Food and Drink

* Media           * Work Experience

* Advertising  * The Arts

 

It may be possible that as part of the course  you will be offered the invaluable opportunity to take part in the Work Experience Exchange programme with our partner school in Ruthen.

 

How is this course taught?

 

Topics will be covered through a variety of approaches including video, internet and newspapers and magazine articles.

You will be encouraged to work independently and research a topic of your own choice for oral and coursework modules.

 

How is the course assessed?

 

You will sit three papers at the end of the first year and these are:

Unit 1 - Listening and writing examination

Unit 2 - Reading/Writing examination

Unit 3 - Prepared oral topic

 

At the end of the second year you will sit two papers and these are:

 

Unit 4 - Oral discussion of issues

Unit 5 - Coursework  

Unit 6 -

  a) Listening and Writing examination

  b) Reading and Writing examination

  c) Writing in registers examination

 

 

Why is it valuable?

 

Germany is a leading nation in scientific discoveries and much scientific information is only available in German.  Universities encourage science students to learn German.

 

Many German firms have branches overseas.  Most of the firms would prefer their employees to have a knowledge of German.

 

Germans are the most travelled people in the world.  Many countries are geared up for the German tourist so wherever you are in Europe you are likely to get by with German.
