FOOD TECHNOLOGY

 

Why choose Food Technology at AS Level ?

 

You will be interested in Food and Cooking.

You will be interested in the Food industry and the development of Food products.

You will want to develop your knowledge of a variety of issues which will extend your knowledge and skills.

You may have studied Food Technology in the lower school (or undertaken GCSE Food Technology).

AS Food Technology can be a complementary subject to Maths , Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Art and Design.

 

What does the course involve?

 

3 units of work, one of which is a Project.

 

Unit 1: looks at Industrial and Commercial Practices through the investigation of a product.

 

 

These are:

Materials

Industrial & Commercial Practices

Quality

Health and Safety

 

Unit 2: is Product Development and is a project chosen by the student and covers all the skills related to Designing and Making, including using ICT.

 

Unit 3: studies Materials, Components and Systems from a chosen focus area.

There is also a second, option paper, which is Food Science.

 

A large part of the above workload will involve practical and testing techniques.

How is the course assessed?

 

At AS Level, there are three components:

 

Unit 1: Industrial Products and Practices

Examination 30% 11/2 hours

Unit 2: Product Development - Coursework Project

Internal Assessment 40%

Unit 3: Materials, Components and Systems

Examination 30% 11/2 hours

 

 

Why is it valuable?

 

Food technology is valuable for a variety of careers including Teaching, Industry, Hotels and Catering, Management, Nursing, Food Marketing and Demonstration.

 

It is a valuable subject for entry to Higher Education.

 

It is also a firm foundation for progression to A2 for students wishing to study the subject in greater depth.
