ENGLISH
LITERATURE
Why
choose English Literature?
You will enjoy it! You will have the opportunity to try a range
of authors and types of texts. The
course will develop your communication skills which will benefit your studies
in other subjects. English Literature
encourages self-knowledge, an awareness of others and the world we live in.
What
does the course involve?
AS involves
the study of core texts including Shakespeare, a novel, a play and some poetry. It will also entail some wider reading. You will also watch and analyse films and
plays and, hopefully, occasionally hear authors= views on literature too.
A2 will further develop your analytical
and critical skills acquired at AS. This
course will introduce you to another broad range of texts including another
Shakespeare play and more drama, poetry and prose.
How
is this course taught?
You will have two teachers and there
will be plenty of opportunity for discussion, presentation and seminar-type
lessons to encourage you to develop your own response to the texts and the
issues they raise. You will receive
guidance and support in planning, structuring, writing and developing timed
essays and longer pieces of coursework.
How
is the course assessed?
Assessment in Y12 will consist of an assignment
and one or more examinations. Y13
assessment will be similar and will include a final examination designed to
measure your performance across all the Assessment Objectives. You will be given a copy of these at the
start of the course.
Why
is it valuable?
Besides developing skills for other
subjects, the study of English Literature is seen by all universities and
employers as a serious academic subject that develops your ability to analyse,
discuss and interpret issues, as well as enabling you to think and write
clearly. This ensures you will have
valuable transferable skills and good training potential in the eyes of future
employers. You will also have a stronger
understanding of our culture and greater personal knowledge, which will give
you more confidence in society. A love
of reading, the theatre, the cinema and the arts in general will also give you
pleasure for the rest of your life.
