ECONOMICS
Why
choose Economics?
Economics is a highly logical and
analytical social science which allows students to understand the way in which
individuals, businesses and societies as a whole seek to allocate scarce
resources amongst competing wants.
It will appeal to students who enjoy
lively debate and topical discussion but who also relish the challenge of
reinforcing arguments with the application of relevant theories and
models. The kind of issues considered
may include: How can economic policies be used to
reduce traffic congestion? What are the
economic costs of unemployment? How, and
why, does the government intervene to influence the level of activity in the
economy?

How
is this course taught?
Economics is taught in a lively and
interactive way with students expected to take full and active participation in
lessons. Theories and methods are taught
using a combination of traditional methods (teacher-led discussions,
worksheets, student reading) as well as student presentations and discussion
groups. At all times students are
encouraged to apply theories to contemporary, often controversial debate. In Economics lessons we welcome students with
strong opinions who enjoy sharing their views with others whilst also listening
to others and recognising the importance of underpinning arguments with sound
economic reasoning.
How
is the course assessed?
Economics at AS level is assessed using
a combination of objective test (multiple choice) questions and data response
questions.
At A2 level students are expected to
demonstrate synoptic skills (the ability to draw it all together) which are
tested via coursework, data response and structured questions.
Why
is it valuable?
Economics is a highly respected
academic qualification. It links
extremely well with most degree courses but particularly provides an excellent
foundation for law courses, business/economics/accounting courses and
vocational courses in leisure, recreational tourism. Economic forces are present in most careers
and therefore the study of economics can provide an invaluable insight into a
variety of careers. Moreover, Economics
equips students with the skills of logical analysis and reasoning which allows
them to approach problem solving in a clear and focussed manner.
