Drama and Theatre Studies?
Drama
and Theatre Studies offers you the chance to experience the changing nature of
theatre, to explore plays, create theatre, and to use improvisation and
performance skills.
You
will study a wide range of plays and practitioners; you will devise your own
pieces of drama and will have opportunities to perform to a variety of
audiences at regular intervals.
Once
you have successfully completed the course you will have a thorough understanding
of drama and theatre, highly toned analytical and creative skills and an
ability to communicate effectively with others.
What does the
course involve?
Unit One:
Exploration
of drama and theatre
Exploration
of 2 plays in practical workshops from the point of view of performers,
directors and designers and through completion of ‘Exploration notes’.
Unit Two:
Text
in Performance
You
will undertake a role in the production of a play, being assessed on the
effective use of performance or design skills. You will work as part of a production team
with a director.
Unit Three:
Text
in Context
You
will demonstrate your understanding of the play studied and performed in Unit 2
and your understanding of a play seen in performance.
Unit Four:
Devising.
You
will devise an original piece of theatre for presentation to an audience. You will need to keep a ‘Structured Record’
to reflect on the process. You will be
assessed on both the performance and the Record.
Unit Five:
Text
in Performance (2)
You
will explore a play and select scenes to perform to demonstrate your
understanding of the themes within the play.
Unit 6:
Text in Context (2).
You
will study two plays, researching the production history and shaping y our
ideas for a full production.

How is this
course taught?
The
course is taught by two members of staff each covering specific areas of the
course but who work closely together.
The
course involves analysis of plays and practitioners such as Stanislavski, Brecht and Brook, practical work in the devising and
performance of theatre and regular visits to theatre productions. Students must be well organised and prepared
to commit to some extra rehearsal time.
