MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY
Why choose
Design and Technology?
It
is a course which is quite different to most others in the curriculum and gives
another dimension to sixth form education. You will have the opportunity to
build on GCSE courses and prepare for a wide range of futures. The course
allows you to develop independence, be creative and extend your technological
knowledge in a structured learning environment. The world of technology is
exciting and important to us all and you will be prepared for it with an
extensive range of experiences and technological information.
What does the
course involve?
In
any design and technology course there has to be a significant part of the
course devoted to problem solving. To
support this you will be taught to identify routes to decision making, project
planning and completion. The core of any
technological planning and decision making is based on a good understanding and
a good technological knowledge.
How is the
course taught?
Clearly
the two courses on offer provide different avenues through which to develop
your technological skills and knowledge. One, providing
graphics as the vehicle for learning and the other, resistant materials.
In
either case:
You
will learn through your experiences how to manage design projects and how to
deal with problem solving in a technological environment.
You
will learn the relevant technologies of project analysis, materials, materials
processing, components and systems.
You
will develop graphical skills in support of your coursework communication and
design work.
How is the
course assessed ?
There
are three units of assessment for AS and a further three for A2.
The
three units in each year assess: Designing
skills
Theoretical knowledge (subject specific )
A coursework project (students own choice)
Why is it
valuable?
If
you have a good standard of education then motivation, interest and the desire
to succeed are the most important requirements of you, starting any sixth form
course. Design and technology is no exception. It is obviously an advantage if
you have a good grade in your
Design
and Technology subject G.C.S.E.
You
are encouraged to consider your choice of subjects carefully so that the
successful completion allows you to realise your ambitions. Design and technology is frequently combined
with a range of subjects to give breadth, technical or artistic bias. It is
helpful to you if you discuss the significance of your choice of subjects with
a specialist member of staff to ensure that you get what you want from them.
Design
and technology has a wide acceptance, amongst employers and in higher and
further education, as it demands the academic rigour necessary for your
credibility.
The
departments have an excellent success rate and prospective students should look
at past years’ results to assess their potential for success on the course of
their choice.
Students
from this sixth form with a certificate in Design and Technology have been to
numerous universities and
are spread amongst many professions in many parts of the world.
