Advanced Vocational Certificate of Education:
Business: Double and Single Award |
ADVANCED
VOCATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION DOUBLE AND SINGLE AWARD
The Kett
centre offers AVCE Business at both
double and single award
Why
choose Business?
AVCE in business can be beneficial to
you for numerous reasons. If you are wanting to go straight from school into the world of
work you will be well equipped to offer an employer the skills that have been
gained through the vocational element of the course. If you want to go into higher education AVCEs are looked upon as the equivalent to ASs and A2s depending on which of the AVCE courses you have
completed. AVCEs
prepare you well for the numerous business-related courses that are on offer at
higher education institutions,
What
does the course involve?
In line with changes to post sixteen education, AVCE is now available in three different
formats. You can take a one-year AVCE,
which involves undertaking three units, from which a maximum of 300 points can
be obtained and gives the equivalent of one AS level, the single award
completing six units which is the equivalent to an A2 obtaining a maximum of
600 points, or you can undertake the traditional two year twelve unit option,
which is equivalent to two A2s giving a maximum of 1200 points.
How
is this course taught?
You will base much of your work on real
businesses, which you will visit or attend presentations by visiting
speakers. Some of the visits will be
arranged by your tutors but as the course progresses you should start to
develop your own business links. You
will be expected to build a portfolio of evidence of your research into topics
studied. This will include information
you have gained from people employed in various business sectors, information
delivered by course tutors using case studies and text books, your own research
using current publications and the internet and discussion groups with other
students. The emphasis of all vocational
courses is for you to develop the skills to become an independent learner and
so produce work that is current, original and interesting.
How
is the course assessed?
One third of all units taken will be
assessed through external exams. The
other two thirds will be assessed through portfolio work, which will involve
completing assignments, which will be internally marked and externally moderated. This means that greater emphasis is placed on
your coursework than on examinations.
Why
is it valuable?
Employers and Higher Educational
institutions value skills and knowledge acquired through AVCE programmes. Many successful students enter the world of
work with appropriate skills and others go on into higher education. Higher educational institutions offer an ever
growing array of business related subjects from which you have to choose.
