What is a BTEC First
Diploma?
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
It introduces learners to particular areas of employment and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.
A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSE’s grades A* to C and is normally taken as a full-time course within the Kett’s Student Apprenticeship Scheme.
What does the course
involve?
The course is made up of six units; three core units provide a general foundation and three specialist units introduce learners to particular topics in more depth.
What subjects will I study?
All students take the three core units:
Learners will also take three specialist units (to be decided by course leaders).
How is the course taught?
You will base much of your work on real businesses, which you will visit or attend presentations by visiting speakers. Some of these visits will be arranged by your tutors but as the course progresses you should develop your own business links.
You will be expected to build a portfolio of evidence of your research into the topics studied. This will include information you have gained from people employed in various business sectors, information delivered by course tutors using case studies and text books, your own research into the topics studied.
This will include information you
have gained from people employed in various business sectors, information delivered
by course tutors using case studies and text books, your own research using
current publications and the internet and discussion groups with other
students. The emphasis of all vocational
courses is for you to develop the skills to become an independent learner and
so produce work that is current, original and interesting.
How is the course assessed?
All units are assessed and graded by teachers. An overall grade for the qualification is awarded to all learners who successfully complete all units. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit and Distinction.
