Why choose AVCE Leisure and Recreation?

If you are interested in working in one of the fastest growing industries in East Anglia or have an interest in leading and taking part in sport and fitness and want to learn more about the leisure and recreation business, then this AVCE could well be for you. Those who gain most from this course are likely to have one or more of the following:

a) an intermediate GNVQ in Leisure and Tourism or Business

b) 4/5 GCSE’s including Mathematics and English Language at grade C

c) work experience or interests in the area of leisure and recreation

What does the course involve?

The course examines the leisure and sports industries and their importance to the UK economy. It explores the features of running and operating businesses in these industries including marketing, customer service and health and safety. You also have a chance to apply your own organisational, business and teamwork skills in working together to run an event.

The two-year course content includes six compulsory units and six optional units.

The compulsory units provide you with a general overview of the industries. The optional units give you a chance to study different aspects of the industry in more detail.

How is the course taught?

Leisure and Recreation is a vocational A level, which means that there is much more emphasis on the practical side of developing skills which can be taken into the workplace. This is balanced however by the necessary theory to support these skills. Much of the content relies on first hand experience of how what you learn in the classroom is applied ‘in the real world’ you achieve this through work experience and visits to leisure and recreation organisations.

The emphasis in AVCEs is on you taking the initiative in planning your own approach to researching and producing work to satisfy each unit’s requirements. Course tutors support you in many ways, by delivering background theory, arranging visits, organising speakers and advising on the planning and content of your work. The more independence that you demonstrate in producing work the higher your final grade could be. You are encouraged to use as many sources of information as possible including ICT, but you will be issued with a core text.

How is the course assessed?

A third of the units are assessed externally, in most cases this is by completing a written test requiring short answers. The other unit are assessed by your tutors and take the form of a portfolio of evidence. These can include written reports, video presentations, and audiotapes of discussions, display materials, photographs and witness statements. Each unit is graded from A to E, as is the final grade for the whole course.

Why is it valuable?

The double award is equivalent to two Advanced GCEs enabling you to gain entry onto industry training schemes and access to most further education courses and some higher education courses. The work experience and insight into the leisure and recreation industries gained on this course will give you an advantage when applying for jobs in these areas.
