study Applied Science ?
Are
you:
If
your answer to most of these questions is, “Yes,” then this is the course for
you.
How
is the course assessed ?
There
are 3 modules in the course, each one contributing one third of the total
marks.
Science at
work
is a coursework module. You will carry out research and write a report on how
science is used in 5 workplaces. You will follow 2 procedures similar to those
used in workplaces, record, process and evaluate the
results.
Analysis at
work
is a coursework module. You will learn some chemical techniques, such as
titrations and infra-red spectroscopy to identify some elements and radicals.
Some physical techniques, such as colorimetry and
chromatography will also be used. Energy changes in the generation of
electricity, and the efficiency of the process will be covered.
Monitoring the
activity of the human body is assessed by a 90 minute exam. You will learn about blood
cell counts, blood tests for certain drugs, electrocardiograms, spirometer measurements and the peak-flow meter. You will
also cover these
imaging methods: x-rays, MRI and CAT scans and ultra-sound.
How
is the course taught ?
The
course is taught at the Heartsease Centre, and the emphasis will be on
practical work. Biological content will be taught by Mr. J. Smith, and the
chemical and physical content will be taught by Mr. K. McLoughlin.
You will be given guidance on how to carry out research. It is possible that
there will be some work placements.
