Applied Art and Design |
The aim of the course is to offer an understanding of art and design methods and principals and of how to acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and understanding needed for the creative process. You will develop practical skills, techniques and processes to a standard that allows you to progress to further study or training. You will learn about the working methods used by professionals, both as individuals and in teams; as well as the process of dealing with potential clients.
The course will show you how an artist designer’s work is involved in a number of given areas i.e. graphic design, textiles, product design, and multimedia. You will also learn how artists and sculptors apply the creative process. You will learn to develop ways of working that emphasize practical independence, plus the value of self-directed learning. Participation in this course will develop your creativity by allowing you to discover your own potential in 2D and 3D art. The course is wide ranging and will discover and develop your own particular personal skills.
The course will offer you the opportunity to move into higher education whether that is to continue your art career or to pursue education in another area. It can offer you a number of different qualifications which include:
Advanced subsidiary GCE – 3 units
Advanced subsidiary (double award) – 6 units
Advanced GCE – 6 units
Advanced GCE (double award) – 12 units
The course is delivered by means of a number of different units, which take the form of assignments to be completed by each student. You will be offered tuition in a range of different areas. These will involve the more traditional art processes as well as vocational areas, i.e. graphic design, textile design and multimedia. Each unit will involve the creative process. Throughout the course you will receive guidance on completing the requirements of each unit. These are assessed internally by your course tutors, but will also be externally moderated on completion of the course.
Applying the knowledge and understanding of others. This is the ability to collect, organise and use information, and in addition to analyze the work of artists and designers.
Applying skills, techniques and understanding. This is to explain ideas and processes that take place in the studio. To understand the appropriate use of materials and techniques and to learn the visual language which allows you to develop a personal style. You will be given an insight into the way in which a studio functions you will gain understanding of how industry works, in many
fields such as graphic design; textile design and product design. The tutors on the course have a wide range of experience and will help you in your given area
Evaluate. This is learning to make value judgements about your own work and recording your critical understanding of other designers and artists.
The course well develops your creative skill by allowing you to discover your own potential in the visual arts. It is wide ranging covering a large area of different experiences. It will develop your own personal insight into the visual arts by looking at artist and designers and give you an insight into how the commercial sector operates. The tutors have wide experience in the field of arts coming from different backgrounds. As a student wishing to undertake an art course but wishing to see how art works in a commercial sense, this course could be right for you.
